The Last Herd – The Story of London’s Last Working Shires in Pictures
The Shire horses working in the Royal Parks and the Historic Royal Palaces, London are featured in a new book, with a foreword by HRH The Prince of Wales. It tells the story of Operation Centaur's Shires which have the distinction of being the last working Shire horse herd in the capital. A year in their lives is followed through pictures by award-winning photojournalist Paul Stewart. In 1893, 30-40,000 Shire horses worked in London, with over 6,000 used in the brewery trade alone. They were the backbone of industry, even delivering the coal for the steam engines of the industrial revolution. Today, the eight magnificent horses of Operation Centaur comprise the only herd left. The Prince of Wales has written in support of the project's conservation, heritage and therapeutic activities.
