Owen Garner with his unicorn of home-bred Percherons from his Willingham-based Hales stable in Cambridgeshire, won the teams class and then took the supreme driving championship at The Royal Show, the last one ever. His win took place against strong competition from light horses. Kevin Wright’s photograph of Owen carrying out his winning show is on the front cover of the Autumn 2009 issue. 
Ensuring the long-term survival of the Suffolk horse
The Animal Health Trust has begun work on a project to develop a sustainable breeding programme for the Suffolk horse, one of the rarest equines in the world. The AHT is working with the Suffolk Horse Society to research new breeding strategies which will ensure the viability of the breed into the future. The aims are to ascertain the current level of genetic diversity within the breed and to evaluate possible new breeding strategies.

Shire breeder Alastair King of the Cotebrook Stud near Tarporley, Cheshire chats with Heavy Horse World editor Diana Zeuner about his breeding techniques and success in the show ring. The Kings also run the Alvanley Arms pub, a great place to stay for heavy horse enthusiasts.
  Suffolk and British Percheron breed shows
Philip Ryder-Davies and Rosemary Cooper report on the breed shows for these two popular British heavy breeds. The Suffolk supreme was Michael Tollemache who had an excellent day winning senior and junior championships, while Gordon Bailey’s 12-year-old Willingham Misty took the top spot at the British Percheron event.
 Ox or horse – which is it to be?
The horse was a much better draught animal than the ox and soon became the dominant draught animal – or at least that is our perception. But is it correct? In the second of his two-part feature Ted Collins, who has made a study of the history of draught oxen in the British Isles, describes the ox’s somewhat unexpected revival and eventual decline.
 Driving force – the Mouland Clydesdales at home in Hampshire
David and Crystel Mouland run the southern-most team of Clydesdales in the country, and last year won the inaugural Heavy Horse Turnout Championship. Anna Bruce went along to meet them and hear how it all began and their plans for the future.
